Go with me? September calls for some slow-down time to slide us from summer into autumn without missing a beat. We're headed into the knobby round hills of Moore County to Lynchburg, near Eden Hollow and Pleasant Hill.

You've heard of Lynchburg, population 668. It's home to the nation's oldest distillery, registered #1 with the U. S. Government in 1866. And that's where Jack Daniels is made, the world-famous, slow-sipping, sour-mash whiskey from Tennessee.

Daily tours begin in the barrelhouse and wind up at the cave where the iron-free spring water used for this famous whiskey pours forth. Watch out when you are allowed a whiff of the fermenting process! Though you are given a bus ride for parts of the tour, be prepared for climbing as you wander over the barrelhouse-dotted hills.

The Lynchburg Square is the county's social center. After your tour sit and gossip with the whittlers, or shop the stores around the square. Many have Jack Daniels souvenirs and one of the most interesting is the Tennessee Tipsy Cake. The Pepper Patch Bakery will ship them anywhere in the country for you.

Just around the corner is the famous Miss Mary Bobo's Boarding House, a landmark dating back to 1866. They are booked all the way into next year for Saturday lunch, and not open on Sunday. But here's a tip from manager Lynn Tolley. Grab a rocking chair on the front porch just before the serving times of 11 and 1 and you may get lucky!

Other restaurants in town are The Countryside, with three meals a day, the Iron Kettle Restaurant, which has plate lunches and a "Whiskey Topper," and On The Square, with prime rib sandwiches at lunch and suppertime. The Ice Cream Shop serves Jack Daniels ice cream, but don't ask them to make you a shake. Liquor isn't sold by the drink in Moore County!

Stretch out the weekend with an overnight at one of several B&B's in the area - Lynchburg Bed & Breakfast, Goose Branch Farm Bed & Breakfast, or Tucker's Inn. Doesn't that sound relaxing? See you there.
