Go with me? Let's put the sign on the door. The one that says "Gone Fishin.'" And if you're not already hooked, we'll learn about the sport that puts us in the middle of nature with a challenge that rivals anything technology can produce.

Kids, if you think Nintendo is the only test of your lightning-fast hand and eye, think again! There is a quick-as-a-flash rainbow trout hiding at the bottom of a stream somewhere just waiting to outsmart you.

Never been fly fishing? Don't know how to cast? Can't tell when a bug is a bug, or when it is a lure? Figure it out at the just-for-kids free clinic on Saturdays at Osprey Fly Fishing Shop, Frazier Avenue.

Caroline and Christine Newell, the fantastic fisher-teens, will take you to the back porch of the Mud Pie, buy you a Coke, and teach you about fishing.

You'll learn how to tie knots and hold a rod. You'll learn why a bandanna is an essential piece of equipment. (How else would you clean the slime off your line?)

These girls learned how to fish at the side of their father, Tom Newell. Together they have fished the nearby streams of the Smoky Mountains, the Cherokee Forest and the Cohutta Wilderness.

"There is no more wonderful activity with your family than fishing," says Tom, owner of the Osprey. "A 10-year-old and a mom and a dad may have different skill levels that prevent them from playing tennis together. But with fishing, everybody goes at his own pace. And besides, it's a lot of fun."

In addition to the clinic for kids, the Osprey has Tom Reuping in residence every Saturday. He's a master fly tier and certified casting instructor who has fished the rivers of the world. No matter what our level of fishing experience, we can sit at Tom's table, tie flies, and learn to match the hatch.

When should we use the stone fly nymph or the elk wing caddis? What time of year is the conehead woolly booger the best choice? Talk it over with Tom.

There are more streams in our area than we can fish in 20 lifetimes. Guess we'd better get started this Saturday. See you there.
