Stop first at the Welcome Center on the edge of the square and gather information on the sights to see. A prime sight is Jack Daniel's Distillery, the nations oldest distillery, registered No. 1 with the U S Government in 1866. Daily tours begin in the barrelhouse and wind up at the cave where the iron-free spring water used for this famous Tennessee whiskey pours forth; watch out when you are allowed a whiff of the fermenting process! Though you are given a bus-ride for parts of the tour, be prepared for climbing as you wander over the barrelhouse-dotted hills. Walk through the original office, where a plaque designates the distillery a National Historic Place.
Check out the Moore County Courthouse, built in 1855 with bricks made right in Lynchburg, and the now-just-for-photographs Moore County Jail, operated by the Moore County Historical Society, donations appreciated.
The Lynchburg Square is the county's social center; sit and gossip with the whittlers; shop the stores around the square; many have Jack Daniels souvenirs. Get your Jack Daniels Tennessee Tipsy Cake at the Pepper Patch Bakery, they ship all over the country. The famous Miss Mary Bobo's Boarding House is a landmark dating back to 1866; make reservations ahead for their wonderful southern-style mid-day dinners.
Stay at Lynchburg B&B, just a block off the square, quaint atmosphere; or Goose Branch Farm B&B, an 1899 farm with 2 rooms, private bath and private entrance, continental breakfast; or Tucker's Inn, a 2-story historical home 5 miles from downtown, furnished with antiques, it has 3 bedrooms with private baths and a 15-mile overlook.
Eat at The Countryside, they serve 3 meals a day and welcome tour buses; Iron Kettle Restaurant, features plate lunches and their "Whiskey Topper;" and the already mentioned Miss Mary Bobo's Boarding House, which is generally booked weeks ahead but if you happen to be sitting in a rocking chair on the front porch around lunchtime you may benefit from a cancellation!
