DeSoto State Park, DeSoto Falls, Little River Canyon, Alabama.
One of the deepest gorges east of the Mississippi River is 27-mile Little River Canyon in 5,067-acre DeSoto State Park on Lookout Mountain. The Little River is the only river in the US that forms and flows almost entirely on a mountain and DeSoto Falls plunges 110 feet from a mile-long lake.
A 20-mile drive along the canyon's edge has many scenic overlook areas where you can pull off the road for incredible views; the park has dense woodlands, wildflowers and miles of hiking trails -- mountaintop and in the gorge. A Nature Center has a trained park naturalist to help identify new-found wonders of the woods.
DeSoto Resort Inn has 25 rooms in the lodge and 22 rustic family cabins; restaurant in the lodge, wooded setting; 78 campsites; hiking trails, swimming pool.
