Summer went away, right before my very eyes. September morphed into October, and suddenly it's my favorite time of year, hands down. Seems like everything summer worked for comes together in the fall; the trees get show-offey and the pumpkins get turned on. Kids have mostly settled into school by October, and football lovers have enough wins and losses for a decent argument.

I like to walk around and look at things in the fall. My office is set in a showcase of walking opportunities -- along the ship canal, by the bay, by the lake, through the trees, in the gardens, past interesting architecture, along the trail. And I live in a neighborhood where sidewalks lead from my front door to the lake, the park, the golf course, past homes, past stores, even to trails that go into the next county.

This month I traveled to familar places in my own environ; checking up on Mother Nature, paying attention, nodding my approval. Pretty good stuff. In two months I'll be walking in unfamiliar territory, on the other side of the equator -- Chiloe Island, Puerto Chacabuco, Caleta Tortel, Estancia Fitz Roy.

The balance for the trip was due today. So now, I'm paid in full and ready to go.
