Tom Sawyer had the right idea. Get somebody else to paint the fence. Our condos were scheduled for a few coats of Sherwin-Williams and the contract date was coming up. First week of September, right after Labor Day. That was the good news. Bad news was -- everything sitting outside had to come inside. If you didn't want it painted Firlyn Green, that is.

I planned for this. If they started on Tuesday, then by Friday they'd be done and I could put everything back on the patio during the weekend. So, a week's vacation would do me. I'd paint all the birdhouses and bird feeders in matching colors, maybe with stenciled trim to brighten things up for my feathered friends. Oh yes, it would be beautiful! A week of creative productivity.

It didn't turn out quite that way.
