I visited Austin in 1999, April, when moving from Chattanooga back to Seattle. Just me and Alex the cat. I spent the previous night in Arlington visiting brother Hal, meant to spend a night in Austin next. However, I got there early afternoon, it was big city traffic, I stopped and did the entire capitol tour, it IS beautiful inside and out, nice grounds, but when I got back to my car instead of hunting for a motel I got this wild hair to just keep driving to Fredericksburg, the little town son Scott thought was so pretty when he drove through.

And so I did. April 3, 1999. Never got to that famous music street in Austin I've heard about for so long, nor did I see the bats! I did see the bluebonnet fields near Fredricksburg the next day. My 60th birthday.

Here are some facts.
Texas was the TWENTH-EIGHTH state.
Date: December 29, 1845
State Nickname: Lone Star State
Key Words: Lakes, Music, Bats, Nightlife; Hills, Johnson

The site that became Austin was selected because it was on high ground, away from the fever danger of the Gulf coast. The pink-granite domed capitol, largest of any of the states, sits on one of the hills that rises from the Colorado River Valley. Seven hydro-electric dams going upstream bless the area with lakes - Austin and Town Lakes are within the city limits.

Modern Austin boasts a seven-block Historic District with restaurants, clubs and shops that attract thousands on weekends for the nightlife scene. Another "nightlife" event is the summer evening bat flight - when the largest urban bat colony in North America emerges from underneath the Town Lake Bridge to forage for insects. The spectacle is one of the most popular attractions in Texas.

See Lyndon Baines Johnson library at the University of Texas at Austin (48,000 students); O. Henry's home and museum; Good Day Ranch, Austin's zoo, on Rawhide Trail.
