The train was on time. Almost to the minute! No private sleeper room this time, but still steps to climb, we find two seats, not too far from the stairs, for restroom ups and downs. The seats are spacious, wide, and comfy too. Not bad, we say, yes, we can sleep in these. Conductor stops, checks our tickets, pins a sign above our heads. "Edmonds" Maybe to wake us up in case we oversleep?

We're moving westward now, and everyone has sort of settled down. Let's find the Observation Car! Of course it's dark, so not much to observe, but we want to get the feel of all the train. Oh, a snack bar on the bottom part, what do we want to eat? Hot dogs, sandwiches, we load a tray and go back up. Seats and tables fill the car. The windows dark of course, but TV's all around, and half the folks have laptops out. We'll have to take a daytime trip, we both agree.

I'm sleepy now, says Andrew as he chews the last bite down. We're still in mountains now, I think, the motion of the train is slinging us from side to side as we go car to car, and row to row. One last pitstop, I advise, so down the stairs again, public potties, wash your hands, forget your teeth.

Back in our seats, Andrew hits recline and goes to sleep. To be a kid! I lift the footrest, then lower it. I sit up, lean back, and squiggle all around. No such sleepy luck for me. I give up and watch the guy in front of me. Just through the crack between the seats, his laptop screen is glowing there, he has stuff to think about, and things to do. I wish I had one too.
