Not too far out of town, we find the Ranch. The sign hangs over the driveway, I turn in and ease along the pasture fence, so many horses, what a sight. A ranch with mountains all around, the ranchhouse in the distance there, the barns.

Bill has the horses ready, Smoky and Rusty, saddled up, ready to get out and roam around. Such a nice guy he is! We chat a while, talk about the ranch he owned before, his family, and mine. He and Andrew hit it off, I sign the form (you know, liability and such) and Lesson 1 is How to Mount.

Ride around inside the fence to get the feel of it. And then they're gone, easy horses walking down the drive, and towards the trailhead in the woods. I look around, chat with all the horses there, and all the dogs. Cabins to rent, near the ranchhouse and further in the woods.

I like horses, remember riding when I was only 8, bareback on our workhorse, so broad and gentle he was. He fell through a bridge, it collapsed with the weight of him and pinned his leg, I stroked his face while Daddy sawed and chopped to get him loose. He died anyway, maybe Daddy had to put him down, he didn't tell me that. I cried about it all the winter long, but springtime, Daddy met me at the busstop after school, drove madly into the pasture land, yanked me from the car and stood me on the ground. Beside the brand-new baby born that morning, son of our dead friend. I can't remember a happier moment in my entire life.

I tell these horses that story now, they nod.

An hour goes by, and then I see two horses coming down the road, and Andrew's riding easy, like he's done it all his life. Well this is good, I think, we've had a good thing happen here.

Bill says to him, Andrew, go inside the fence there, and ride around some more, see what you can get your horse to do. He looks so cute out there, I think I'll buy this boy a horse, but no, my condo isn't big enough for that.

We're in the car now, heading back to town. That's the best fun I've ever had, Andrew declares.
