I called the number from the night before, yes, Gaynor's Ranch, Bill answered, listened while I told. My grandson here, never rode a horse before, are you still open for the season? Everything else seems to be closed for winter now.

No, come on out, Bill answers, be here at 1 PM and I will take that boy out riding on the trail. Andrew's happy! We go downstairs for breakfast, continental style, the room is full of Sunday brunchers, we fill our plates and take a window table there. Guess what. The pool is full of swimmers, little children, splashing while the steam floats up into the morning cold. We laugh at this.

Checked out and loaded up the car, so where's the compass? Not in the seat, our bags, we stop and look through everything, the trunk, and all. Maybe we left it in the room? We go back in, retrieve the key, I've had this compass 30 years or more, don't want to lose.

Can't find it anywhere. I guess we left it on the train is what we figure out. We'll have to use our bloodhound nose. Or the map. Or, the Garmin, Andrew points out. Well, yes.

Turn it on, let's find Gaynor Ranch.
