Matt loves guns. We'd borrowed Granddaddy's old shotgun and leather bag full of ammo to take to the shooting range. Granddaddy went on a few deer hunts in his day, has an old deerhead stored out in the garage. Those shells are pretty old, he warned.

It was quite a nice little drive out into the country to get to the FOP range. I thought I'd sit in the office air conditioning and sip a Coke while Matt shot at targets but alas, they considered him a minor who needed adult supervision. Like I'd know what to do! I bought earplugs for myself too and out we went, to the tin-roofed shootin' spot.

Granddaddy's ammo worked just fine. So fine, in fact, that the kick nearly knocked Matt's shoulder off. "I'd like to try a pistol" he said later, while we were cooling off inside. They had them for rent.

"This is fine," he said, after shooting a few rounds. "Ah yes, this is fine."

On the way home he spotted the high-rising glass-topped Galleria alongside Hwy 459 in Hoover, the biggest shopping mall in Alabama, so they say. "Let's stop there!" Matt shouted out.

City boy, missing the big city? He checked it out, cool dude, while I sat amongst the ferns and sipped a Starbucks.
