It takes a long time to get through Atlanta, even on a Sunday morning. Lanes and more lanes, converging and dividing, the GPS is speaking, TURN RIGHT but does it really mean HERE? I make a wrong choice, I've done that very thing before, At least I know how to correct it now.

At last, some open freeway, and better still, at last, our exit to the north. We're on Hwy 441 now, tourist country here, Baldwin, Cornelia, Demorest, Clarksville. We switch out drivers, my head is rolling down asleep. We stop for gas, caffeine. Were we just DUMB, a 5-hour drive with not a wink? We have to go, they're expecting us, in Gatlinburg. Keep driving.

Clayton now. My mind recalls the map. "Matt" I say, "let's turn out here, let's go out Hwy 2. You can be in South Carolina in nothing flat."

And so we go.

"I'll get your picture by the sign," I say, tradition from the past. Grasshoppers hop surprised as we walk to the river's edge.

"This is the Chattooga," I point out, "it's the border between Georgia and South Carolina. It flowed behind our house when we lived in Ware Shoals, way back in the woods."

But I was wrong, it was the Saluda there. Doesn't matter though, they look about the same.
