We left Rome very early in order to catch a train to Pompei, a small town outside of Naples Italy. Pompei and a town nearby, known as Herculaneum, were both destroyed in 79 AD by a volcano. Pompei was buried under an estimated 20 metres of ash. In the last few hundred years it has been excavated and is now open to the public.
The site was really huge. It really was a huge town that got destroyed. All of the roofs of the buildings were collapsed so now only walls are left. Interestingly, there were solidified bodies in the houses. They just looked like beige rock in the shape of humans and dogs, but it was really neat. It was also sad, because some of the bodies are solidified in positions that describe fear. There are people crouched in corners with their knees folded in and their heads on their arms, there are also people on their backs with arms up. I imagine there was very little warning before these people got buried.
