On the way from Basque Country to Barcelona, we drove through La Rioja, which is considered to be Spain’s best wine region, stopping in the towns of Laguardia, Haro, Briones, and Lagroņo. The landscape was beautiful with fall foliage and the towns, rich in history, were tons of fun to explore.  Before reaching our destination, we popped into Zaragoza, the capital of Spain’s Aragon region, for what we expected to be an uneventful lunchtime pit stop.  We were pleasantly surprised to find the Basilica de Nuestra Seņora de Pilar, an incredibly ornate, enormous church where St. James the Apostle is believed to have seen the Virgin Mary descend atop a marble pillar.  Even after seeing what feels like 1,000+ churches in Europe over the past several months, this one still managed to spark our interest.
