Mandalay was our last full stop in Myanmar. It is the second largest city with an imposing palace in the center of town. Unfortunately, the palace, surrounded by a moat, is closed to the public and used for government functions so we were unable to actually see it beyond its walls. We took an interesting trek up Mandalay Hill to view the sunset from a pagoda. There I was approached by a novice monk who was intent on practicing his English with me.
Another Irrawaddy river trip took us to Mingun to view a pagoda that was heavily damaged by earthquake and the Mingun bell, the largest operational bell in the world. The housing along the riverbanks, while referred to as temporary fishermen's huts" were on stilts and were quiet picturesque.
We also visited Inwa which was a former capital of the country in historic times There we were
taken on a carriage ride to various pagodas and ruins strewn amid green farmland and tiny
villages.
