The following day we visited Tarsus, notable as the birthplace of St. Paul, one of the 12 apostles,--as well as the home of Mark Antony and Cleopatra in the first century BC. The drive from Adana was a relatively short one.   As we entered the city we stopped momentarily for a look at Tarsus waterfall on the Berdan River.  This would be a cute spot for a picnic.  The waterfall is pretty, but relatively small.

Tarsus is one of the oldest cities in the world going back to at least 3000 BC.   There is little to see of its ancient city as the new Tarsus has been built over the old and many of the older architectural remains have been recycled into the newer structures.  There are some quaint, old neighborhoods to walk through. Our first stop here was to visit St. Paul's well built in Roman times and sitting beside what is considered, by some, as the site of his family home (which can be seen at ground level under a glass platform).  Somehow St. Paul's Church, which was included in our itinerary, was skipped.

The Roman city of Tarsus was believed to have been the meeting place of Antony and Cleopatra.  Here you can see the Roman Gate that is also known as "Cleopatra's Gate" and sometimes referred to as "Gate of the Bitch".  Why?  Who knows.

Actually, having seen the city, I would have chosen a different spot to visit as there was really little to see here. However, if you are interested in religious relics this might be up your alley.
