Where I stayed
Today we discovered Erzurum, eastern Turkey's largest city. It's name derives from Farsi. Set high on a plateau and surrounded by mountains, Erzurum has hosted many important civilizations, including Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuk Turks, and Ottomans. Along the way to the city we passed an ancient Ottoman bridge which is currently being restored. It was beautiful. Several structures of medieval Erzurum survive, including the citadel fortress and the 13th-century Madrasa with its twin minarets. We also visited a mosque and had an informal talk by the local imam which was very interesting.
We visited a local handcrafts market where we saw locals carving a local black stone, known as jet, or Oltu tasi, into jewelry.
