Santarem was our first port of call in Brazil and borders the Amazon and Tapajos Rivers so one of the things to see here is "the meeting of the waters" though it is not as spectacular as seeing the Rio Negro and the Amazon join together outside of Manaus.
Santarem is not an exciting city to visit. It is a worker's city along the Amazon. The city is old, with few attractions, other than the ship's excursions to the rainforest, to see. We walked the street along the waterfront after receiving warnings to hold on to our cameras and wallets. We encountered no problem. There weren't even souvenir shops in town so it was kind of an "in and out" visit.
