The heat's been getting to us a fair bit.  Today we decided to just wander around town a bit.  I can't resist taking photos of these impressive buildings.  It's such a shame that not much else is left of the past.

The white building is the library... not sure what the others are.

There's still a lot of the cotton stuff in the air from these trees.

Odko offered to take us to a market during her lunch hour so we met up with her near her work and we hopped into a taxi.  Yeah, the usual deal, you stand by the road, hold out your hand and within seconds a car will stop.  Surprisingly cheap too.  Less than fifty cents a kilometre.  There's no meter... they just check their mileage meter before they start.

Odko brought a friend along so they all had to squeeze into the back.

On the way back from the market we tried the taxi trick ourselves and I was happy to find that I could interact with the driver in Mongolian.  I still find it strange to actually speak Mongolian so the interaction with the driver was good for me.

We ate at a Ukrainian restaurant...  The food was ok though I was expecting some Ukrainian waitresses or something, but instead there were a lot of Mongolians dressed up in Ukrainian costume.  Perhaps they were left behind after Genghis invaded back in the thirteenth century...

Nora's found a new source of Bacardi - the supermarket next to our hotel.  Cheaper than Australia of course.  She's never without her water bottle.  Here she's showing great concentration to ration it out just right.

I ended up dragging them along to watch some soccer in a huge beer tent.  They had individual 3 litre beer kegs for the tables and I was determined to try one... but they were out of them by the time we got there.

The Mongolians are not immune from the Asian practice of holding up a couple of fingers any time that a camera is pointed at them.  But we've managed to get Odko out of the habit.

Hanging out with Nora and Neil a fair bit I've picked up the correct technique for drinking and smoking at the same time...

It was either boring or late... or both...

You can't blame me for falling asleep this time...  soccer really is bloody boring.  It's just a mania... nothing to do with it being a particularly interesting sport.

Good to see that Odko got some sleep at the soccer.

She had to work the next day and we were out till 4:30.

That wasn't enough for Nora though...  we kicked on with her till 7:30.

Out until 4.30 drinking, smoking .... then presumably sleeping during daylight, waking to wonder what you did the night before... you can do that at home!!
