The view towards the congress-centre from the road towards Modra. Lots of nice greenery... lots of grapevines, nice villas dotted around the hills.

First day of this lernu.net event. I've already managed to drag someone away from the convention centre to the restaurant up the road for food... and beer and he decided we should have a few shots as well... and remarkably he already had a list of which of the local distilled fruit juices he fancied. Maybe this week won't be as quiet as I thought.

Everyday someone always seems to be at the restaurant with a huge dog. Maybe all guard dogs as some of these houses are pretty impressive and might need some guarding when they're away... or home.

At five we had a language test which was supposed to group us for the coming week of classes.

I'll be pretty disappointed if I'm not in the top group. As I didn't really come here for the classes I probably won't attend if I'm not in the top group.

Later there were some introductory speeches, including from some local officials. Everything was given in three languages which meant the whole affair really got dragged out. I didn't mind that much as they had somehow found someone to do the English that had a really pleasant laid-back style. And I liked listening to the Slovak to see how much I could understand. But still, it went for quite a while but I suppose there's really no solution.

Then people milled around a bit. There was a bar as well so it gave me somewhere to gravitate to.

Tea time came and I'd elected not to have any of my meals at the congress centre. I usually find that the prices outside are reasonable and I can experiment with the local food... plus have a drink and get table service. From what I later heard, in the kitchen in the congress centre they were also experimenting with the local food - but more in a science experiment sort of way.

Back to the congress centre for some more mingling then a walk back to Modra at midnight. There was a much more direct road than the one I'd taken before but halfway down there were no more streetlights and it was suddenly pitch dark. I had to walk over the white stripe in the middle of the road to stop from falling into the ditch at the sides of the road. And even then the white stripe was pretty hard to see.
