Well, the polyglot gathering might be finished but I got wind of a post gathering activity to go to today. A tour of the Wall Memorial guided by one of our local polyglots. Most had already left so there was only a handful at the tour.

It seems like a long time ago now - well it wasn't exactly yesterday - but still for many people armed guards ready to gun anyone down who got too close to the wall were a reality that they would see every day. Looking at present day Berlin it just seems unbelievable.

Here is where some of the tunnels were dug.

Part of the original wall. Note how the wall goes in one piece to form part of the area in front of the wall. This was to make it harder to knock over the wall with machinery. In fact in the early days there were several escapes by people driving into the wall.

There are grim reminders all through the zone where the wall was to those that were killed trying to escape. The last killed was on the 6th of February 1989. Pretty tragic when you think about it.

Some border guards tried to make a run for it too. No doubt some became guards hoping for such an opportunity.

This one jumped the barbed wire and got away. Immortalised in this classic photo.

You won't need a newspaper on this toilet.

You can while away the time waving to the tourists.

Probably a significant church, but I think I missed the explanation. It now looks like some cult could make use of it. It has that look to it.

We finished up with food. Vegetarian Vietnamese... Typical Berlin.

Hearing how well some of the others speak their languages I might have to take some of mine off my badge next time. The bar has been raised. Or I suppose i could actually do some study.

Back to my suburb for the soccer. Nice big tent but the weather's not too good.

Nice drinking area but generally pretty deserted. It's just not hot enough and there are more interesting drinking spots on the street.

It's Pfefferlinge time. Some sort of wild mushroom which you only see for a short time each year. I killed two birds with one stone by having the schnitzel option. Eggs would probably have been better. The schnitzel was a bit too dry.

Eventually I had to take refuge inside because of the weather.

But one thing about Berlin, there are TVs everywhere ready for the soccer.. Come game time, every bar, takeaway shop, kebab shop will have a TV set up with people watching.

One last beer for the day at the small place opposite my flat before calling it a night.
