We went to Galveston Island. It was October 2003. The air was still warm with a hint of fall. The beaches almost deserted. Imagine long walks at sunrise, the passing of a fishing boat. The wind and sand and surf. Heaven. I never feel more alive than I do at the ocean. I love Galveston. It's so full of history. The island was always a major seaport. It once had an immigration station on what is now Seawolf Park. In the late 1800's to the mid 1900's, thousands of immigrants came to Texas through Galveston. On September 8th 1900, a terrible hurricane hit Galveston.
6000 to 8000 people were killed. The city was destroyed. Even now as I walk on these beaches and look out at the waves, I can feel the energy of this great storm and of all those who were lost here.I grew up on these beaches. My children have played here. As I grow older I still appreciate the beauty of this place. I will have my ashes scattered here. This is my Galveston.
