How Do groovers....its the hapless boy Cox with a truncated update of his tall adventures to peave and sicken you all as you thrust your noses onne again toward the grindstone.
Well I took the 3 day two night trip to Flores with as it turned out 10 others. The boat, which became like a pirate boat, sailed most of the day with varios stops and all night. I slept on the deck (or not as the case may be) as a cheaper option to cabins, which actually turned out to be a fake beach on the back platform of the craft. Imagine coming to in the middle of the night with your sleeping bag flapping in the howling wind and the horizon bouncing, snad under you, mad irish people flanking you as the full moon lights up the land that time forgot!! Bloody ace!! What a trip. We stopped at various uninhabited atols for snorkelling jumping off top of boat and BBQ's, stopped at Komodo and saw the amasing Komodo dragon in its natural habitat*, watched numerous sunsetsd and sunrises with inumerable photo's,swam in lakes on desserted islands along with lots of other cool stuff. We ate like kings 3 meals a day. Fresh 5ft in some case fish were caught on route and filleted alive befopre being cooked a hour or two later for our tea.
* The title of this Chapter was derrived from a pant wettingly funny incident where a Komodo dragon turned and moved toward Yunko who lept away shouting in broken english 'me no yummy!!' which then became the 'cheese' at subsequent photo calls.
On arrival in Luban Bajo I was sick as a dog wqith cold and fever. This was particularly bad news as my sinuses were so blocked I could not dive and prospects were poor for the next few days. Thats a pisser I thought....you travel to one of the best dive sites in the known world and come away dry. Oh well. It was going to be too much hassle and time to overland in Flores due to depleated tourists, shit public buses and a stinking cold so.......I got back on the boat and was well received by the cre and the crew. The working crew consisting of the talented singer and chef, Captain 'madhorse' tommy, Adi the 'dear sweet guide' and many other fantastic lads. The punter crew consisted of Steve, Shane, Yunko & Moto (bloody stars from Japan - very funny), Nick, Anya and another german girl (oops ther goes the hooplike memory again), Jonny ( a real live american firefighter from Las Vegas who renewed my balance in americans- nice bloke) and last but by no means least Mick and Tony. There were a few changes and sad goodbye to Shane and particularly Steve who trvelled on to Flores and Ireland repectivelty but not before a good send off.
I hadnt been drinking for a good few days when this send off happened. Full of cold but not wanting to see Steve go without a send off I got, after a breif mime, some medicine from a pharmacy in the fairly desolate and non appealingh town of Luabn Bajo. I then cracked open the 35 dollar bottle of red I had carried along with my emergency G & T all the way from OZ. (G&T didnt make it past the bali ferry)
As I was having a drink and trying to taste the wine through the snot I got chatting with the crew. They asked to see my medicine then seriously informed me this was dangerous medication and asked how long ago I had had it, they said it was even more when taken with alcohol and that some had died before taking it off me and giving me some herbal stuff for the morning. (which I might add was a wonder cure!!)I of course did the sensible thing and finished the wine and took my chances. (not bloody carrying the bugger accross continednts to see others glug it as i look on!!
Return Journey was cool to. We went to Rinca island which was better than Komodo and more heavily populated with wildlife such as dragons, waterbuffalo, deer, monkeys etc we also made several stops On Sumbawa and outlying islands for jumping off waterfalls into pools, snorkelling on amazing beaches and other stuff all aginst a moving backdrop of island studded bubbling waters of the thermocline. Great place to meditate as the sunrises..wow. I also lost at cards.
We had one night in Sengigi and sad farewell to all but Mick and Tony who I joined for a return to Trewangan for a couple of days R & R. from cold and sleeplessness. Off to Ubud on Weds then Lovina after that for a spot of diving of Menjangan I hope. Still off the beer and onto the moderate excersise, reading anf meditation....thats not to say in a balanced life there is no room for a couple more nights of bar dancing!!!
Cant really do all this justice without boring all to death including self.
Bye for now
