Where I stayed
Wow,fairy tale island city, was in Scarlet Pinpernel and even some recent computer games.....that's the good news, the bad is that 3M people visit per year. That's an average of almost 10000 per day across all the year....so I guess today in peak holidays there were 20K people. It was v efficient but you park your car a long way away. It's a 40 minute walk or 10 minute walk and then a navette (bus) each way. No great drama but it was crowded, very crowded!! Well worth a visit and free, apart from the carpark cost of €8.50 Pay more to go into the Abbaye.
I should have mentioned that we walked around the ramparts at St Malo when we started the day. Cool but sun on the back was nice, and still just a T Shirt.
After we left Mont St Michel, we headed to another of the most beautiful villages....this time Barfleur. About now we started thinking about where we were going to sleep tonight, so we drove around looking for the tourist bureau. What followed could have been a comedy skit. We drove around looking, no joy and so we parked Pug and decided to walk. Then we spotted a sign for the tourist bureau (TB), we started following the signs but saw a nice hotel. Let's not rush into things, so kept walking to the TB. After a fifteen minute walk we arrived. The same spot as we'd decided to put into GPS "Tourist Info" - she couldn't find one nearby..!!.. They told us that there is only one hotel and they only have one room "you'd better move en vitesse"....so we scooted back to the hotel and, you probably guessed by now, they had just given that room away.
Fortunately the Tour Director had also asked about free wifi in town, so we headed off to the cafe with wifi (no mobile coverage) to login to hotel booking sites.
About now we noticed a bit of noise on the wharf, it seems a local had trouble parking and needed external help. I have seen some crazy parking since arriving in France but this topped it all. I didn't go too close but don't understand how he stayed dry????
Back to our bed for a night, the magic of the Internet found a place 80km away but towards Bayeux (our venue for tomorrow). Off we headed and our gps on this occasion got us close but no hotel??? Once around the block and still no hotel? We stopped and Sandy asked locals, who pointed us in the right direction (they thought) but said if it is not there come back for dinner and abed at their place. Fortunately(?) they were right and the hotel is lovely.
One more twist... We knew the hotel did not serve dinner and they pointed to a local
favourite at Omaha beach. We visited here with Allen and Deanna a few years back. Dinner was sensational
as you may guess with the number of photos uploaded...we have good internet again tonight
Tomorrow the Bayeux Tapestry
