We didn't quite get into the water but we hung out in the surfers car park. In fact it gave us one of our first laughs of the day...we took one of the last bays in the free car park overlooking the ocean. As we walked back we saw one car that had taken up two bays by their poor parking and the car park was now full. A newcomer was not impressed and when I looked I realised why...not just poor parking but poor parking with the 2 offenders asleep in front seats of the car, oblivious to it all. It was only 10am, too early for them!! I guess my biggest surprise was that there was no horn tooting or car rocking....just a shrug
Surfing at Biarritz is v dependent on the tides, at the wrong time of day there is zero beach...all rocks. Other trap is that it seems fog is an issue. On Sunday the fog became heavier around middle of the day??
Day started a little earlier for me on Sunday, I decided to set the alarm for 8am and have a morning walk along the local beach before we headed to Biarritz. Alarm went off, I looked out...still dark?? Daylight saving has started and my clever phone updated itself..rolled over for another 30 minutes in bed
We hired two velos (bicycles) for a couple of hours. I now understand why you see so many scooters doing dumb things...14 year olds with no licence can hire them for €20 for 2 hours. Sandy obviously impressed the bike hire people with her French as we didn't get bikes off the floor (battered ones), we were given two brand spanking new ones. I must say that Biarritz is not the best bike riding place....very hilly. We also made a small mistake and thought that the sign meant "bikes ok" but was meant to be interpreted as "no bikes". Was a picture of a bike in a red circle....no diagonal line, just a bike in a circle Oh well no one said anything to us
Drove on to Bayonne, found a cute little cafe for lunch. They spoke zero English and I thought I was getting cod and it was smoked ham...oh well tasted good and they had the last lap of the F1.
We then headed off for a drive into the Pyrenees, beautiful rolling hills and farms....and fun driving
Along the way we realised that there appears to be no restrictions burning off, and one video below shows the locals smoking out the village. We saw that a couple of times???
The other highlight was watching the local weather on TV. It was in a small bar with the sound turned down. In most places of the world, the formula is pretty much the same...attractive girl in front of map with a little animation. Now imagine you are in France....they took the formula and messed with it a bit. See video below
Other highlight today was that we found the BIG supermarche. Not that we needed it but another experience. Sandy found it when she was asking a local about buying a PC printer and he directed us there. We lashed out €40 on a printer...must be a tax deduction as a cost of earning my income as an author.
