Alright well this will be a short update. Things are good here in Salerno but I have to get to Naples tonight. Pompeii is on the way but I heard it is ridiculously hard to climb up and explore with a backpack so I am going to wait until I don't have my bag. The train from Naples left a half hour late yesterday, not sure why. It took me forever to find out if the ticket I bought was for a train or a bus or an underground thing, ahhh. The Italians always seem to think they know what you are talking about and just say whatever. They like to talk but its not always helpful.

Anyway, the hostel here in Salerno is decent I think but this girl who has been staying here for like 5 nights doesn't like it. She thinks its like a halfway house in addition to a hostel. It might be. But I don't get the same looks as she does so it doesn't really bother me. There are quite a few guys sitting around watching TV right now.

So last night I went swimming in the sea, it was salty but felt really good. I watched the sun go down behind some cliffs. Italy is different from what I expected. Not that I don't like it, but I expected it to be so glamorous and its not always like that.

The guys who sell their stuff on the streets and in squares are from a different part of the world, from Africa. The guys in Rome and Florence look like they are from India or somewhere like that. Its exciting to be here, I want to go explore the coast and take lots of day trips to places like Capri, etc.

Thanks for your comments everyone, that was funny Val. Haha.

AAAH- The sunset on the ocean
Sounds like a wonderful, if not always romantic, journey- all part of the experience, and more like real life there than just the tourist thing where everything's planned out for you, and all you ever meet are the hotel personnel and the tour bus drivers. Ithink you get a better feel for what the country's really like that way. Enjoy! Love you! :)

Capri is beautiful
Hello again Ben! Julie and I loved Sorento and the island of Capri. It was beautiful and worth the trip. Lots of flowers and it did seem to be the more glamorous part of Italy. Take Care and enjoy the sunsets!

your mom is right again.
I don't know, Ben. Even if Italy is not as glamorous as you expected I think there's alot to be said for seeing more of the country and people than just the travel brochure hotpoints. Again- I'm so proud of you for taking on the whole 'throw myself in with a backpack and a prayer' approach. And for representin'. A whole world of people to meet and understand. Enjoy! Love ya!, Val
