...because every holiday going out of the country must start in Hixton. You always need the proper frame of reference to appreciate the holiday even more.

We named the journey "Spontaneous Combustion Tour '03" because one, every good journey needs a title, and two, when Candy and I get together, we are able to build off of each other and goad ourselves into doing things we never expect we could. We make each others' cheeks hurt from laughter.

This journey was ideal for us because we were good acquaintances before, but not great friends, so the holiday could either make us best friends for life or we could part ways and not have lost an integral friendship. As we told each other before the trip, we wouldn't be surprised if we'd be at each other's throats at the end. I had just finished a semester of Portuguese and impulsively bought two tickets to Brazil. I needed a travelling companion and she'd never been out of the country, so we fit perfectly...or so we thought.

Moving back a day to Jan 4th, we start in Bloomington, MN where Candy and I and friends were at Camp Snoopy inside the Mall of America for a reunion with all our friends. After a rousing round of rides and fun, we headed to Grand Slam for a night of Lazer Tag! Next we went to Mystic Lake Casino, because we gamble and it's our favorite place to waste time. And finally Sketchy Denny's our favorite diner. Here's the thing. Instead of abandoning our friends on our one reunion night, we went out with them on their fun run. Then instead of taking a two hour nap afterward, we went to Wal-Mart and more Mystic Lake to keep us awake since those are the only 24-hr places we know of. And finally at some moment near 2 am, we headed off to Chicago. Now here's the thing, this is Candy has only travelled to Minnesota and Wisconsin her entire 21 years of existence. Now she was going to Chicago, and then later Newark and finally Brazil. Quite a big jump.
