Hi everyone,
We are doing good down here. I just got off the phone with Seth's nurse and he is resting and stable. His procedure started about 12:30 today, he was put to sleep around 2:30 and the tube removed about 7:15 tonight. For those who I am confusing this procedure is started with meds that keep the adrenaline rush from detoxing from increasing heart rate and triggering symptoms of withdraw. There use to be a believe that if a person was asleep and did not know that it was OK to let them withdraw (shaking, GI upset and such), but now they control the adrenaline rush and the heart and brain do not receive the storm from the release. Then after those meds are given he was given drugs to clean the receptors of opiates on the brain. I thought narcan was the only thing they use, but they use other drugs also. I know as a nurse I should have known what they were saying, but there were a lot of medicines with big long names being rattled off. And to be honest I just wanted them to get him in and start before the heroin he had taken at the hotel wore down, because they cannot start the procedure if signs of withdraw are starting and when they had done the vitals on arrival his heart was racing (probably was from drugs - but I didn't want anything to stop from continuing). The nurse said they will wake him up and have him take some pills about 11pm. It seems that I thought we were coming for heroin detox but Seth has been using mixture of things so he will have to take a medicine to stop drug cravings for a few months and then be cut it back slowly. I feel optimistic - this hospital has a 90 % success rate at 1 year - and that is very high for any program offered . This Dr. Spanaugle went overseas to learn this procedure. They perform 8 detox tx daily. He is also involved with a doctor in Vienna using a device that is for pain that is hooked to the ear. He asked me if I would like to try it for a headache. I react so weird to stuff I decided not. He gave a lecture yesterday about chemical imbalances in the brain. It was information that I had not heard of before. He also explained the difference in some of the ethnic backgrounds and their differences in reactions to drugs and alcohol. Such as Asians have very little tolerance for alcohol due to a chemical they have in there brains, while Caucasians have less and more are able to tolerate large amounts of alcohol before becoming sick, then he related this to the American Indian population that has very little or none of this chemical to help them react to overuse - so that is why their alcoholic rate is so high. It takes a large amount of alcohol before their brains even signal the body that it has over used.
I will go to see him at 9 am and then go to a class at 10am that is given to the caregiver, each person has to have someone to give them medicines the first few days and we will have to stay in the area until Monday. Then we will fly back in the next few months for them to met with Dr Spanaugle again. They really seem to believe they have the answer for adjusting the chemical imbalances, I hope they are right...........

One the other side of life I am here in this Holiday Inn practicing with a mechanical ball return putting Pal. I believe this golf thing is going to be a long-long road.

Even though I am alone I cannot tell you how much of a relieve it is for Seth not to be here going in and out of the bathroom and hearing him in there shooting these drugs into himself - it has been 2 days that do not seem real. I wonder if I am just beyond reacting or if I will later, wish I knew so I could get prepared.

Sending a picture -sunset from our balcony tonight.

Thanks for all of the thoughts and prayers you have e-mailed me.
Love,
Beverly
