I called Amtrak today and booked my 30 day Amtrak pass ($579) from May 20 - June 18, plus one extra day (Jun 19, NOL-HOS, $47) to actually get home.  As well as getting the 30-day pass, you also have to book each leg of the trip to guarantee availability of the seat.  Another limitation of an extended day pass is you can't travel over one link of track more than 4 times.  I will likely pass up San Francisco to go to Reno, then back to SF, then west to Chicago, hitting that one link 3 times.
I haven't been on Amtrak since I was very young; the last train I was on was Mid-France to Amsterdam in 2006.
I have about half of my itinerary booked. I still need to iron out my week before WWDC in either Reno or San Francisco (or both).
