This can't possibly be counseling... L. Barbagli 5/22/13

No point in sugar coating it....But this cannot possibly be counseling... In my opinion, the field of counseling here in Italy almost sounded like some kind of sick joke.. I can completely understand why psychologist and psychotherapist here in Italy have banned " counselors" from calling what they do "therapy". The differences here as described by one of the speakers,Mr. Barbagi, was something completely beyond belief to me. I'm actually not quite sure how I feel about the field of counseling here.

In all honesty I don't think that I would seek counseling from " counselors" here. They do not seem to be qualified enough to help. The training here for counseling students is laughable!!! 3 year program but they only meet one weekend out of the month( except the month of august. everything literally shuts down during this month)there are no exams, students only receive " one mark" at the end of 3 years for a presentation. There is only a 250 hour supervision requirement for certification as compared to our 3000 hours.... Additionally, there seems to be little to no boundaries in therapeutic relationships here. ( I.e. dual relationships, touching, etc)

There are so many differences in Italian counseling and American counseling. So many differences that it almost concerns me. Concern for clients. It seems more like pseudo-counseling and it would be more fitting to call Italian counselors life coaches or something of that nature....nonetheless, I do understand that these differences are shocking to me because the culture of counseling in Italy is very different from that of which I'm more familiar with.
