We rented a car for the week to get around. We had a Hyundai Getz, a cute little zipper. It was automatic as well so we could share the driving responsibilities. We followed the Great Nature Trail along the northwestern short of Tasmania. We stopped at the Table Cape lookout. The scenery is gorgeous and the beaches look amazing; the sand is so soft and white.

We stayed in Smithton, past Stanley. It actually was a really nice motel called The Bridge. They didn't really have good cooking facilities there, mainly just a microwave so we ate a meal out of plastic. But it was clean and comfortable and hardly anyone was staying there.

We drove out to the west coast of Tasmania to a couple of lookouts, then climbed Stanley's Nut (which is a plateau) for some great views of the area. We were struck but how little people there were. Kilometres of soft beach and hardly a soul! However, the areas we explored weren't on the main tourist trail, and if you only had limited time on Tasmania, I would say you could skip it. Especially because we had to go "off-road" a bit on gravel and our car wasn't exactly insured on these roads...
