We have arrived safely in Paris! After a good flight and some sleep we arrive at Charles de Gaulle airport and (after some discussion on meeting place) found our transfer and we were off to downtown. We are staying four blocks north of the Siene River and the Place du Trocadero in a lovely private hotel owned by the Marriot chain with a courtyard and several buildings in the area.

The area is quite charming, lots of side streets, boutiques, cafes, and restaraunts. We spent most of the afternoon and evening in the area of the Pl Trocadero and then walked through a festival down to the river and across to the Eifel Tower. En route to the tower we saw the wildest rollerblading action ... teens rollerblading frontwards and backwards down multiple flights of granite stairs! Think of quick mogul runs on rollerblades. Wild.

The Eiffel Tower is amazing both from a distance and near. The base impressed us the most, it is wide and intricate with gondola-like elevators moving slantwise up the legs (one entrance at each compass point of the base). We walked down to the Peace Memorial and then back towards the river as twilight fell over the city. Sundays are family days in the parks, kids of all ages and parents walking and making a day of it, even in the early spring temperatures (50F). Dinner at the Cafe Trocadero where we watch at the top of the hour the Tower with a strobe light display for ten minutes.

We hope to actually go up the tower and other sites tomorrow while the working folks are at their jobs and the crowds are less. One downside is that the exchange rate is really, really bad. $US 100 only buys E60! C'est la vie.

Having said that, we love Paris!
