We all opted as an optional extra to do the 5 hour city tour.

Leaving at 8 am we boarded 4 andong or horse cart. Fine if you are of a wee Asian build but us larger versions it took a bit of use to get in and out of such a tight legless space. At least the guide said … “sit up the front” which I duly did.

Off we trotted. The horses oblivious to the surrounding traffic. It was good to be able to take to photos of street life at this slower pace.

First up was the largest city market in Jogya.

Next the keraton or the place where the Sultan and his family lives. It was really a museum all about his and the previous Sultan lives. Heard that the 7th sultan had by 15 wives 78 children. The other sultans were just as good! Thank goodness today’s current sultan has only 5 daughters and 1 wife!

After a snack at the local guide’s home just outside the wall of the keraton, next up was a visit to see some local crafts. Puppet making with buffalo skin being used as the material that was punched out with a metal bicycle wheel spoke and then coloured. The “tree of life” again features.

Taman Sari or the water castle that previous sultans and their family used as their bathing pool was next. Yes, it is in need of much restoration.

The main section has 2 ponds that is separated by a rise building. The water for the pool comes out of the unique animal shaped shower.

It was good to walk around this area as it meant that we were able to walk through the narrow alleyways and had a peep into the locals lifestyle.

Back onto the andong horse cart and trotted over to Kota Gede or the the old city.

In this area are many of the silver industry stores. No, I did not ….

By now it was hot. The guide said at least 34 C and again very humid. But we had a bit of a breeze and being out in the open of the horse cart, I was quite surprised at the lack of the vehicle fumes.

Finally back to the hotel and a very late lunch again next door at Via Via. As it is Saturday I opted for the Saturday special: Sayur Lodeh = Javanese dish of long beans, belingo leaves and chili cooked in coconut milk, rice and fried tempe. Yes, I had another Vitamin Rush = Orange, grape, strawberry, banana. 22,000 Rp + 25,000 Rp = 47,000 Rp or just over NZ $6 or US $4.

Time out till dinner at 7 pm. Milas is a vegetarian place a few blocks away. Walking there and back was fine. Oseng Oseng: fried tofu, tempe, bean sprouts, long beans and red chili 19,500 Rp with a Nanas Mix made with pineapple, papaya, lime and honey 12,500 Rp. Decided to treat myself with an apple, cinnamon and honey pancake 15,000 Rp. Grand total 47,000 Rp (just over NZ $6 or US $5).
