Pangandaran is a small fishing village popular with visitors from Jakarta and Bandung looking for a coastal escape. It is suppose to be Java’s premier beach resort. In many ways it reminded me of how Phuket in Thailand could have been 20 years ago without the hotel resorts and tourism markets and bustling night life that it has now. This beach will be like that one day no doubt!

Thirty miles of this coast line was hit by a tsunami in 2006 with the lost of some 600 lives.

Aep, the local guide, led all of us on the optional 50,000 Rp (NZ $7 or US $5) walk though the Penanjung Nature Reserve on the adjoining peninsula which boasts some impressive flora and fauna. He was like a Dr Dolittle who could talk with all the animals.

Dinner that night was in the hotel. Nasi Capcay 30,000 Rp + large Bintang 25 Rp + 10% tax = 60,500 Rp  (NZ $8 or US $7).
