You may well be saying that Bruce had only just in January returned home from 6.5 weeks travelling around South America and he is off again. What a life for some!!!! Yes, you are right. I am fortunate.

As I said in this blog’s introduction, when I reviewed my recent Ecuador - Galapagos, Peru and Bolivia trip with Adventure World’s Eve, the travel bug within me was saying ... "You can't wait 12 more months before your next trip! Where can you go for a short mid winter break?" Eve’s magic travel wand said "Bruce - you must go to Indonesia mid winter!" I hope that you are right Eve.

So with some 86,000 One World's frequent flyers points accumulated over many years of travel to use, I redeemed 60,000 points of them for the return international flights. Sure, the transit times may be a bit long but what the heck …

Ahead of me is a 22 day overland trip to Indonesia's islands of Java and Bali with Intrepid Travel and a few extra days at either end tacked on for good luck. I did not want to endure tomorrow's 20 + hour flight from Auckland to Jakarta via Hong Kong, so decided to leave an extra day early. This will really give me an opportunity to see what Jakarta’s infamous horrendous traffic is like.

With the tour finishing in Ubud and being so close to the over crowded tourist area of Kuta Beach etc., I am staying one night in Seminyak which is the neighbouring beach to Kuta Beach. Most Kiwis and Aussies know this part of Bali so 24 hours there will give me a wee taste of why it is so popular. Perhaps I will return one day now that Air New Zealand has direct flights?

I hope that on this trip to see and experience a little bit of what Indonesia is really like away from the touristy parts and big cities, see the different religions living side by side, experience first hand the diverse culture plus hopefully witness some stunning sunrises and sunsets in a real scenic and natural surrounding. Brought plenty of memory cards plus a new external hard drive.

So it is time to leave New Zealand's winter behind me and enjoy this break in a warmer climate.

Ahead of me are a few 3.30 am rise to climb small mountains / volcanoes to hopefully see the sunrise but the guide book said that the temperatures could get down to single digits and be really windy. So will my merino tops be worn? Got a good opportunity to test out how merino breaths in a summer climate.

This is what lies ahead of me … join me and experience Indonesia through my eyes and few words by clicking onto the next entries.

Leaving Auckland at 8 am on QF 142 meant an early wake up. It was really mild winter morning about 15 C at 5.45 am as I waited for Chris to take me to the airport. I wonder what the low and humid 30 C in Jakarta awaiting me will be like for me.

With a new passport, my photo in it looks likes that of a terroist ... you can't smile anymore. Having past through the new smart gate and avoiding the manual immigration process, I was pulled aside just after security X ray and had my 2 hand pieces swabbed for explosives. I was clean! It was a random check that they were doing to many passengers.

With a daylight flight I got a window seat: 19A to Sydney on one of Qantas’s new 737-800.
