Telefon Bay was our next anchoring at the head of Deception Island's 4 miles by 3 miles horseshoe shape bay. Being a sheltered spot it became a favourite for whalers who set up a shore station.
We walked up to peer into the various carters. It was moon like reminding me of the North Island’s Mt Ngaruahoe and Mt Tongario central plateau region.

The second morning landing would take us a few miles into Port Foster to Telefon Bay, where we hiked up to a crater and stared down into its depths, where in 1969 it had last erupted.
