D Day = departure day / transfer day.

The rest of the GAP "End of the Earth" group left for Buenos Aires just after mid day but I left at 9 am for a 9 hour 4 x 4 drive with a bb que lunch thrown in. Not cheap in my mind at 380 pesos, US$90, NZ $ 120 but at least it got me out into the countryside again. There was nothing else in Ushasia that I had really wanted to see that would take the whole day. No point in going back into the National Park again.

The 4 x 4 was a bit of a show but I had never done any 4 x 4 so …. Why not? The 4 x 4 section was not that long but we ended near a beaver dam above Lago Escondido, one of the lakes which with the strong wind had white horses racing across the wave tops.

After lunch, there was a 40 minute canoeing on another but more sheltered part of the lake. But as it was still cold, factoring in the wind chill on the open lake and while the Qura Plus pills were working, I was still not myself so I opted out. Not me despite what I had signed up for the forthcoming ice (kayaking)!

As it was New Year's Eve and as this is when Argentineans celebrate at home, Ushuaia's restaurants were effectively closed for dinner but fortunately with a full hotel of cruise guests, the hotel restaurant stayed open till 9 pm.
