Where I stayed
I had recently seen on TV the effect of the beavers in this part of the world so took the 280 peso (US 70, NZ$ 90) evening walk to see the beavers and dinner option that was available. The effect of just 25 pairs of Canadian beavers introduced in this area in 1946 is huge. They are a real pest just like our opossums!
Again nature was not co operating and while we saw several beavers at work swimming and bringing in pieces of timber for their houses, none actually got out of the water.
We were shown photos taken over the previous few days plus explained about the destructive effect on the habitat. Trapping and controlling the numbers is the only way. While there are some positive benefits to have the beavers (better nutrients for the soil), the negatives far outweigh them.
Even with man destroying the dams, the beavers will simply and quickly repair them thinking that nature had broken their work.
