Camped in the desert

Sudan had more to offer than we had first expected. It's mainly desert in the North, but with some awesome views. We drove along the Nile to Dongola before crossing to Karima. We managed to drive around the Dunes and passed a temple before visiting the pyramids. Bruce loved testing the car out through the Dune sand, as we've been really lucky and have had good roads pretty much the whole way so far. I’m happy to report he managed no problem. It is worth mentioning that the Garmin and Tracks4Africa maps are very out of date for Sudan. We would have gone through the desert on a gravel road a few kilometers away from a tar road, had we not got a little lost and asked someone the way to Atbara. We decided to follow the tar road we were on, which the Garmin maps did not have on them.

The pyramids were impressive, although smaller than what we had seen in Egypt, they are almost better, as hardly anyone comes here to see them, so you have them all to yourself. We then crossed the river and drove through some smaller villages towards the Nuri pyramids. People here seem very happy and live a good life. The Nile is impressive. It is such a vast river that gives life to so many. Awesome experiencing it.

We chose to camp out in the desert, rather than check into a hotel, as they are pretty dingy and I think it’s safe to say we’re finally getting into camping, so firmly back in the "Die Hard Club". We camped a couple of nights before heading to Khartoum.
