Tuesday 16th November 2010 – Galway to Sixmilebridge (Cloudy, 8'C)
Yahoo – Bruce booked our room in Dublin for Saturday night at the same hotel (Arlington). Our trip today took us out along the coast to see The Burren. We had to detour as one of the roads was closed so had a longer trip along the coast. However it was very spectacular limestone country and very wild and windy. Not much grows there in the rock but there were a surprising number of houses – we couldn’t figure out why they were there unless they were all keen on surf casting!! We stopped at the Cliffs of Moher – wow was it blowing a gale there!! You could hardly stand up straight. I wondered how the seabirds could fly and then land on the ledges on the cliff face. We stopped at Bunratty Castle on our way to the hostel. There is a folk village as well as the castle there. The village is a bit like the one out of Belfast but on a smaller scale. The castle was restored in about 1960s and was really worthwhile visiting. It was a lot bigger than I thought it would be. We continued on to Sixmilebridge and found the hostel. Unfortunately for us it’s closing soon so no restaurant open. It wasn’t fun trying to find a meal in atrocious weather !!! We’ll make sure there’s somewhere handy for dinner at our next stop!!

You'll be happy to have the gentle breezes of the Hauraki Plains after all that Irish gale!
