Leaving Granada behind, we headed north to the island of Ometeppe. It was a half hour bus journey to the port, then we took an hours ferry to the island. We had an amazing view of the 2 volcanoes, Concepcion and Maderas. Concepcion was the active volcano, emitting gases and Maderas was the dormant volcano.

We met our local guide Javier, and took the local bus to the small town of Altogracia, our hotel was in. The Hotel Central was ok, but rather remote from most things on the island. We had lunch in the Hotel Castillo next door (not recommended as rather slow) and then had an hours walking tour of the church and the small museum with some petroglyphs. The evening was spent in a local restaurant and I enjoyed some burritos… not Nicaraguan food I know, but that was a real change for me!

The next day we had a full day tour. We started of at Charco Verde (means snake country), a local nature reserve and had a 2 hour walk through the forest and around the edge of Lake Nicaragua. We saw a howler monkey, brown banded snake, turtles etc, but really it was just a really nice walk. Afterwards we headed to the petroglyphs; these were engraved between 1000-800 yrs ago by one of the local tribes, and there were 4 different forms: human-like, animal-like, geometric and abstract. We enjoyed lunch at the beach, then headed to the natural cool springs pool for a lovely swim. This was a lovely day and we saw quite a lot of the island.

Finally, after 2 days on the island we got the ferry towards the mainland. It was only an hour, but I got burnt! We then headed towards the Pacific Ocean and San Juan del Sur.
