Sydney.

Where to begin?

We've been in Sydney for a few months now, and unlike most people who come to Australia, it was actually our last stop since we ended up doing a big loop the other way. Since we've been here though, we've been thoroughly impressed. The city itself is beautiful and there's always plenty to do... so I suppose we unintentionally saved the best for last.

When we first got here we crashed for a few nights at a hostel, but then immediately moved into a place in the Redfern area. Apparently 20 years ago this place was not the nicest place to live, but for the most part, now it seems to be a student ghetto more than anything

While we lived there we started looking for work, and sold the car. As I said, Sydney is great - but not when it comes to driving. Having a GPS navigation system seems to be mandatory since the city refuses to label its streets. Furthermore, the public transport here is pretty good, and we got bikes which rendered the car pretty useless anyways, but it was a good car and we were a bit sad to see it go.

Brooke found work pretty quickly at a cafe, and I took a little bit longer to find something, but in the end it turned out to be a very cool job, which I'm enjoying quite a bit. It's doing captioning work at a company called Red Bee Media, and Brooke has now also got a job there, although in a bit of a different role.

We've managed to stay pretty busy since we've been in Sydney, mostly because there's so much to do. We've been to a few different concerts, beaches, and restaurants - even just wandering to different areas of town is a good way to spend your time here.

Brooke's family friends Paul and Mary also live in the city (albeit in the north side, which is about an hour train ride from us) and we went for a hike with them to the some of the northern beaches one day. There really do seem to be endless things to do here, because there are so many parks and great coastal spots to check out.

Brooke's parents also came for a visit to Australia a few weeks ago, so we stayed busy doing stuff with them (while they were in Sydney at least). We went to the Taronga Zoo (yes, another zoo, but they hadn't seen all the crazy animals we've been lucky enough to see) and also took a trip to the Opera House with them, to see the show Carmen. Despite my unfamiliarity with the opera, it was actually a pretty good time, and the setting of the Opera House makes the night out that much more fun.

We also are lucky enough to have some Canadian friends in the city as well. Haley moved down here from Byron Bay (she got sick of the rain that was pounding the northern NSW coast/Queensland) and our other friend Mike who we know from Kingston now lives here with his girlfriend, so we've had some company to go to the beaches with... or movies, or go out to any of the million Thai restaurants this city seems to have.

We've also moved into a new place in an area called Newtown, which is great. It's in a big, renovated old terrace house, and everyone in the house (who consist of English couples, Kiwi couple, and French couple) is great. In fact, as a house we just celebrated Australia Day with a good old fashioned Aussie 'barbie' (BBQ) complete with 'kanga bangas' (kangaroo sausages) which was great (especially for me since I worked that day, and came home to a feast, without lifting a finger!).

Anyways. That's a pretty condensed version of our time in Sydney so far, but that's what happens when you let it get as far behind as we have. Hopefully the next one won't be so belated.

- Nick.

Nana & Poppa on

Hi Nick & Brooke, Nice to hear from you again & see some more pictures. You have been busy with working & visiting the sights. It seems odd to see you in summer clothes & we are freezing here. We have been seeing some bad flooding in Australia but glad it was far from you. Have fun & keep writing on the Blog. Thinking of you.
