Unfortunately, since I left Sydney my internet access has been off and on, and my entries will probably come in more slowly. Let's hope that means I'm too busy enjoying my travels to bother! ;)
Sunday evening I found myself on the first leg of my East Coast journey, on my way up to a large town called Newcastle. This was my first experience with my hop-on-hop-off Greyhound pass - and allow me to give a SCATHING review of that particular driver, who was a total stick-up-his-arse prick to everyone on the bus. Thank you, I feel much better now.
"Newie" is about 2 hours north of Sydney on the coast. It's a cute little town with lots of history and what I can best describe as a "sweet" vibe to it.
My first couchsurfing host, Kathryn, is an impish, free spirited person with a great sense of humor. I had some very nice chats with her and her roommates, Claire and the two Bens. On Monday Claire and I wandered down to the coast to Nobby's Beach. We nearly got blown away by the wind as we tried to walk out to the lighthouse, but it was lots of fun nonetheless! Even here in this old industrial town the water is all shades of blue, which is just taken as a given on the East Coast of Australia. Back in the States, water this clear means prime real estate! Strolling along the water, I loved having Claire's company - she is truly a kindred spirit.
In the end I didn't get to see much of Newcastle, but I had a surprisingly great time just hanging out with these new friends. I really regret not booking my bus ride for one day later. The whole experience reminded me that it really isn't so much about what I'm doing, but whom I'm with, that matters most.

I am particularly enthusiastic about the final line of your post! :-) I couldn't agree more. Miss you.
According to "Kevin", Newcastle is known for the largest coal (thermal coal) port for exports in the world. Impressive!. Beautiful picture:)
