After waking up in Tokyo, we took a three hour train ride to Kyoto on the Shinkansen (bullet train). The Shinkansen was as nice as ever; lots of room and an extremely smooth ride. I slept while Adam watched the scenery and took pictures. We arrived in Kyoto around 3pm and got to work sightseeing right away. First we went to Higashi Hongan-ji Temple. The main hall is one of the world's largest wooden structures. Later we went to Kyoto Station, which also doubles as a huge shopping center as most of the bigger cities main stations do. We toured three of the five food courts in search of supper. The food courts are higher end with sit-down restaurants, not like back home where they are comprised of fast food. We finally decided to visit Ramen Alley (about ten ramen noodle shops in a tight hallway). You placed your order via vending machine outside of the shop and gave your tickets to the waitress. After supper we made our way back to the hostel and planned for the next day.
