11 July

At 09:00 we departed Randy's apartment for our trip to Kanchanaburi, arriving at the Ploy Guest House at 12:30. We checked in for our overnight stay.

We then went to the nearby Jolly Frog Guesthouse for lunch. The temperature was so high we were in no condition to eat a large meal except for Randy, who eats as though every meal would be his last. We then went back to the guest house for a rest and to cool down.

At 17:00 we walked to the site of the railroad bridge, known as the Bridge Over the River Kwai, which inspired the movie of the same name. Two bridges were built and completed in 1943: The wooden one made famous by the movie, which was destroyed by American bombers and never rebuilt. And a steel bridge, which was plundered from Java, transported to Kanchanaburi, and reassembled over the River Kwai.

Two spans of the steel bridge were knocked out by Allied bombers in 1945. After World War II, the State Railway of Thailand repaired the steel bridge and upgraded the tracks to conforming standards for permanent operations.

Randy and I walked across the bridge to the far side of the river. While crossing the bridge we tried to imagine the horrors, suffering and deaths of the prisoners who worked on the Death Railway. We then walked back to the Jolly Frog for dinner.

After dinner we walked back to the guesthouse to retire for the evening.
