I wanted to take it easy today before the race so I signed up for a bus tour called the Golden Circle tour. This tour took you out of the city to see one of Iceland's Geothermal Plants, a historical site, a waterfall, geysers and a church.
First, we went to the Geothermal plant which provides hot water for heating and hot water for homes but also used to heat roads and sidewalks too! This was an amazing place. The water is taken to the city via pipeline some 27km and will only lose 1.8 C of heat along the way. That's impressive!
After the Geothermal plant, we went to a site of historical significance as well as a place where we could see fissures. Two continental plates meet in Iceland which are responsible for much of the geological phenomena on the island.
Then we went to a very large waterfall. What was neat there was the fact that you could walk right to the waterfall. A wet experience I do say so! Also in the distance you could see one of the glaciers that covered many kilometers of area.
Next stop was the town Geysir where you guessed it, we saw geysers. It's fun to watch them explode!
Last stop was a pretty church on a hill.
That night, we had a pasta dinner to get ready for the next day. I tried to eat as much as I could because I knew tomorrow I would need it.
Early night tonight!
