Brian Deets

Cultural Experience

Tempest

My son and I travelled to Bloomington on a very warm and humid summer day. We had done a little shopping and then decided to grab something for dinner as we had made plans to eat outside on the grounds of Ewing Manor. Once we arrived at Ewing Manor we grabbed a blanket and our dinner and proceeded to find a nice spot overlooking the grounds.

Christian, my son, was really looking forward to watching the Tempest by Shakespeare and had never really been to see a play. We had finished eating and took our things back to the car and proceeded to tour the grounds and the beautifully manicured gardens. When we finished they were just letting people into the theatre.

We proceeded to our seats and they had a nicely decorated set with clouds in the shape of a circle on the back of the set, a matching circle in the center of the stage, staircases on either side, and material draped to look like waves of the ocean .

The play began with Prospero and his daughter watching a ship crash about the water in a heavy storm with the help of the fairies. His daughter was very intrigues by these human creatures who washed ashore but were all split apart and  lost on the island. She was hoping her father would have them spared.

The play continued and Prospero's daughter came to fall in love and at first he seemed to want to keep them apart, but later as everyone came together he allowed them to marry and return faith to his family.

My son really enjoyed the play, but other than the terrific setting I really thought the play dragged with the exception of Kareem Bandealy who played the devil slave. If it was not for him keeping my interest I could have fallen asleep. I guess my expectations were too high for this Shakespeare experience, but maybe that’s why the show was not sold out.

Even though I was not impressed, my son and I still had a great time and enjoyed the afternoon and evening, plus it exposed him to Shakespeare.
