Today I am travelling to Germany at a time when Hitler is coming to power. I am visiting my good friends, but they are in a panic because they are Jewish and many of their friends are leaving the country in fear of what is happening to others in the community.

My friends the Blumenthal's have decided to leave Germany for the United States and we are going to Holland now to try and catch a ship. I have never been on a cruise before, although it appears as though I will not be able to go on a cruise at this time because my friends have been arrested and are being put into a prison at Westerbork in Holland.

I am really not sure what to do or where to go next, I was really looking forward to seeing the many sights in Europe, but because of the situation with my friends and the Nazi’s taking over Holland and a good part of Europe I am not feeling very secure.                                                     I keep in touch with Walter Blumenthal as I am concerned for the well being of their children, Marion and Albert.

I received a note from the Blumenthal’s and they are being moved to Bergen-Belsen in Germany and will still be imprisoned. I decide to try and get a near to them as possible but I have been advised to return to the United States.

I have another friend in Germany and have found that the family is suffering and that Walter has passed from typhus. The children apparently are barely surviving, but Marion has been playing games with pebbles in order to keep mind free from what is happening.

Today I have received another letter and the Blumenthal’s are free after Hitler has been defeated. They have plans to leave as soon as possible and will be coming to Peoria to start a new life in the United States.
