TUESDAY, 17th October

We had already cleaned the house from top to bottom. All that remained was to pack and wash the car. With bucket of warm water I did the honours but in spite of using the hose to rinse I ended up with streaks all over. I removed them later with a dry cloth. We went to the library for the last time to return books and check the mail. Another witty missive from B in Sydney. I renewed our Homelink membership.

We had a delightful lunch in a tiny restaurant in a Radolphzell backstreet that offered an exotic menu including kangaroo and emu would you believe? It was so comfortable. Low ceilings, timber furnishings, walls covered in knick knacks or pictures and tablecloths. Normally we avoid covered tables but we could not resist this one. And it was the last table anyway. It did look a little cluttered but it had atmosphere. There were even cushions on the bench seats in the nook in which we sat. We settled for a soup and turkey lunch. Anne had it fried with chips. I had it in strips in a mushroom sauce and hash browns. They were both big meals and we could not handle dessert.

Time had caught up on us as well. We had to get back to the house and catch buses to Singen to pick up the rental car. When we returned to our parked car there was a police van and several 'policei' hovering around it. I thought our free parking days were over but they were actually trying to catch speeding drivers along that part of the road and completely ignored us as we drove out of our 'no parking' spot .

We drove home, parked the car for the last time and caught the bus at the end of the street back to Radolphzell from where we caught another to Singen. That one traveled around the backstreets picking up students, raced through Bohrlingen and disgorged us at Singen station. We walked from there to the Europcar offices and picked up our Mercedes...an automatic, diesel station wagon.

It was very easy to drive and I parked it opposite for the night outside the 'Rathaus'. We gave the kids next door some presents including the new babe in 15a. We watched some TV and went to bed early so that we could make an early start the next day after washing the bed linen.
