WEDNESDAY, 21st June

A day at home reading, diarying and logging. Anne's hand is not better it gives her a lot of pain at times. We both agreed that it may be broken although we couldn't understand why it had not affected her in other ways. She tried binding it up but was uncomfortable with it. Still insists on using it though except for cutting one of those half bricks with the brick saw. Her knee has gone all yellow too. I might have to amputate. There is nothing worse than an active female who can't do a thing!

We are eating lots of rubbish. Mars bars, nougats, choc biscuits and chips. Not that there is a lot of choice in the Minervois shops to indulge. We checked out the library but there were no English books. We took a stroll through the cemetery...a walled, well maintained cemetery...common to most Mediterranean towns. We cannot understand why they are never attached to a church. A lot warmer this day...humid too.

It seemed to get quieter every day in Felines. A lot of tractors around in the early morning. Many of them were housed in our street behind what looked like garden gates but were tractor garages. We don't hear them from inside the house but on the main street they are very noisy and all seemed to be in a hurry to get somewhere. That somewhere could only be within the vines. There is nothing else grown around here other than grapes. Not a farm animal in sight except dogs. Grape vines from horizon to horizon. And once again the we will miss the harvesting which will be in September. I don't know how they managed to sell it all. Each small town has its coop or winery from which it produces its own labels. I don't know what would happen if the bottom dropped out of the market or a disease hit the crop. There are rumours that a lot will be ploughed back into the ground no doubt at French taxpayer's expense.[Neither of us by the end of our stay would recommend wines from this region The reds in my opinion had a bitter after taste. OK with rich foods but not to quaff on its own. The whites were drinkable but then so was mineral water.]

I gave the car a bit of a wash over with a bucket and a wet rag...one of my t-shirts that had seen its day...or so Anne had decided.

I saw England play Sweden the previous night. 2-2. I was not impressed and neither were the press. No cohesion in England's play. I reckon Australia could beat them. They were to play this night. Also a Brazil v Japan match.
